ONLINE OFFICE APPLICATION SUITES
Office applications can be expensive, and they’re inconvenient for the user who works from multiple locations. Online office suites are a low-cost, portable alternative. You don’t have to download or install any software, you can store documents online–which means you never have to worry about your computer crashing– and you can access your documents from any location. The biggest advantage to online office suites may be their price: most are free.
Google Docs and Spreadsheets is probably the most popular option. Google Docs offers a basic word processor. You can do all the typical things: change the font, set indents and alignments, adjust the spacing, and add bullet and number lists. Google Spreadsheets offers more than two hundred functions. Both Docs and Spreadsheets are compatible with popular file formats such as DOC, RTF, CSV, and XLS.
For those who aren’t keen on Google, Zoho’s many online applications might be a better choice. Zoho gives users a range of programs to choose from. There are applications for creating word processing documents, spreadsheets, presentations, databases, planners, wikis and much more. Zoho Writer and Zoho Sheet and Show also support all Microsoft Office formats, so if you really need to work offline, you can do so with ease.
Another online office suite to check out is ThinkFree. Their service is fully compatible with Microsoft Office, and they offer one gigabyte of free online storage space. ThinkFree is a free-for-now program; their website states that they plan to charge for services in the future.
